Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnobirthing is suggested to be as much of a philosophy of birthing as it is a technique.
When the birthing mother can go into their birth without FEAR and with as much KNOWLEDGE, SUPPORT and the TOOLS for birth - then their birthing experience can be a POSITIVE and EMPOWERING experience.
The ‘hypno’ part of ‘hypnobirthing’ refers to the hypnotherapy that we use during the program to RELEASE FEARS and condition ourselves to release all the positive, happy endorphins at times during our birth. Hypnobirthing is about teaching the birthing mother how to utilise self-hypnosis to enter a deep state of relaxation by switching off the part of your brain that controls your thoughts.
Your birth can be a more CALM and RELAXED experience with the use of hypnotherapy. It can be one where you feel more in control, instead of an observer of the process.
The techniques you will learn completing the Hypnobirthing Australia™ course will allow you to achieve a deep state of relaxation, enabling your body to open up without resistance. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant (endorphins) will replace your stress and fear hormones (which can cause your uterus to constrict and create tensions and pain). This will increase your ability to instinctively work with your body during your labour.
If you happen to lose control, you will have all the tools to bring yourself back to a calm, relaxed state. Your birth partner will also learn all the tools and techniques to support you throughout your pregnancy and birth.
How amazing does this sound?

Despite what the name suggests, hypnobirthing is not all about hypnosis! The course is where you and your partner will learn everything you need to know to therefore mentally and physically prepare for your upcoming birth.
It allows parents to anticipate a positive birthing experience by taking complete ownership of it.
Birth is not about control. It is about release. As a woman, our body knows what to do, and we need to trust this. We cannot control the birthing experience in the slightest, however we can control our thoughts and the decisions being made around our birthing options.
Our own thought process is incredible powerful.
Negative thoughts affects your body’s normal hormone balance, depletes serotonin (the happy hormone) levels, and damages the immune system. There are also studies that show that positive thinking can assist with lowing levels of distress and promote better coping skills during stressful situations.
Mothers that use hypnobirthing techniques stay that the physical experience of their labour was less intense. This has been attributed to their mindset, the support they received from their birth partner, and the techniques they used.
That is why the face to face positive birth programs are broken up into four sections:
- creating and maintaining a positive mindset
- building a toolkit for birth
- preparation and choice for empowered birthing
- and all the information about the actual birth, bringing all the information together

The best thing about this course is that it is for absolutely everyone!
This course can be perfect for:
First, second or fifth time mums
Women who would like a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC)
Women who have experienced a difficult, disappointing or traumatic birth previous.
It is also perfect for your partner or your birth support person! If your partner has a lack of knowledge and understanding about the birth process, unrealistic expectations and/or an undefined role when it comes to your pregnancy and your birth, this can lead to fears and doubts. If this person then attends the birth and brings doubt and fear into the birthing space, this can, and will, effect the birthing mother and the conduct of labour.
It is essential that all support people bring trust, positivity and faith in the birthing women and in birth.
Hypnobirthing will help your partner or birth support person to be fully prepared and confident as an active participant in the process, not a passenger along for the ride.
Your partner will together learn what normal physiological birth looks like and the recipe to help achieve that while keeping your partner and baby safe.

Anytime after 25 weeks is the optimal time to take the class.
I would recommend around the 30 week mark, as I believe this gives you enough time to prepare for your labour by practicing all of the techniques.
However just remember, the only time that is ‘too late’ is after you have had your baby!!
